Ben, Shelton and Dennis Skerrett (w/ son Will)
Greybeard Records was founded in 1979 by Shelton Skerrett and BEM Skerrett III. The original location was to be Greybeard Mountain, North Carolina (right near Asheville). Instead, Greybeard kept its Spanish moss and remained in Lafayette, Louisiana, where it produced zydeco, jazz, punk, rock, folk and commercial music. In the late 1990's, Greybeard underwent a name change and became Skerrett Recording Studios (SRS).
Greybeard/SRS recorded and produced a number of albums and a plethora of advertising & commercial work, some of which can be found here. Most of the region's advertising jingles were written Shelton Skerrett, who still holds the record for the most Cajun/Zydeco jingles.
The tradition is carried forward with the reboot of Greybeard Records by me, Dennis Skerrett, the son/grandson of the two founders.
I began working as a live and recording engineer in 1998, helping to produce works and albums under the Skerrett Recording Studios and RightNote Records labels. During that time, I began mixing national and international acts and was asked to become the house engineer at the Heymann Performing Arts Center, a 2200 seat proscenium theater/concert hall.
In 2004, my focus shifted to venue management. I became a venue executive (GM), consultant, and an active member in the International Association of Venue Managers. Over the years, I've trained countless engineers that have gone on to work with artists touring the globe, and recording engineers who have opened their own successful studios. In 2024, when my father passed away, I decided to reboot Greybeard, and keep doing what I've always loved.
If you're a legacy customer, a large inventory of original Greybeard/SRS commercial reels and audio files are maintained (and available for remastering).
The primary focus for Greybeard moving forward, is to provide quality mixing and mastering for artists that are looking to publish their works for download & streaming services, and/or physical media. Let's start a conversation about your project and your goals.
